The OZK Bx was created using our OZ Kush F2 #29 (Garlic CBG) as the pollen donor and High Alpine’s Legendary OZ as the receiver. We hunted through two rounds and over 150 OZK F2s to find the Garlic CBG donor we used in these new hybrids. I also went through 60 – 70 Legendary OZ’s to find the three selections we used to make this Bx. To be completely honest, I haven’t been more excited to drop a project than I am now. I’ve fallen in love with the complexity of the OZK and her hybrids… from all the flavors, chemotypes, and morphologies, she’s been one of my favorite lines to hunt, grow, and smoke. And the Legendary OZ’s from Thomas turned out to be no different. They had everything I expect from the OZK, plus more. The legendary really added some nice vigor, structure, and resin all while taking a backseat on flavor, letting the OZK shine through.
So, I’m calling this a Bx, even though I’m not crossing it back to the same OZK #1 that was used in the original cross. Instead, I chose to use the Garlic CBG donor as I’m really interested in creating new CBG lines as well as mixed ratio CBD:CBG hybrids. With this cross, I’m hoping to capture the broad flavor spectrum of the OZK, from garlic, to berries and everything in between. As well as inject some added vigor, resin, and new flavors into the OZK line. And from what I’ve seen with these Legendary OZ’s, I’ve done just that. They bring over insane resin production into an already resinous line and add in some unique hashy flavors as well as solid structure and vigor.
Legendary OZ was created by High Alpine using our gifted OZK #1 breeder cut pollinated with the legendary OG. The OZK #1 was pulled from the original OZK F1’s and was used to make the OZK F2s as well as the whole OZ Series. It’s a beautiful purple plant with a 6:1 CBD:CBG ratio and a super complex berry perfume profile. Combined with the legendary, High Alpine produced some outstanding plants. Highly mold resistant, super resinous, and too many keepers to count.
As for the pollen donor… I did not find the CBG plant I was looking for in our first hunt of OZK f2’s. I had an idea of what I wanted, but the only ones I could find were very Maddog leaning. That is, they tended to be more sativa in structure, long spear shaped buds, and always lower yielding but fast finishing…with some being done in 7 weeks. So, I kept a few and postponed the project until last year when I was able to run another half a greenhouse of OZK F2’s and this is when I found the one. Our #29 tests around 13-15% cbg and 1-2% CBD, .3% thc., with a distinct savory garlic profile. But apart from that, her bud structure and morphology is what caught my eye. She sits on a nice indica hybrid frame 100% self supporting, perfect node spacing, and massive resin coated chunky buds. She stood out from the beginning in a sea of OZKs and is the perfect combo of Maddog Flavor on a Kush frame, and the CBG we were looking for.
The one issue I’ve found is her slight propensity to mold if taken past week 8 of flower. From what I can see, this is due to the density and morphology of the buds. I grow in the PNW, which is prime testing grounds for mold resistance. Even in my greenhouses, which are climate controlled, Botrytis always seems to be hanging around. What I’ve learned with these really dense, heavy yielding plants, is that they need to be taken slightly early when dealing with high humidty. Harvested from week 7-8, we saw no mold, however the ones we let go past week 9, botrytis popped up in the biggest buds. This was during our warmest and wettest September, where it rained everyday for the last half of flowering.
I point that out for transparency and to let growers know to keep an eye out for mold late in flowering. But with this in mind, each LOZ receiver we selected showed high mold resistance and did not have any issues when grown under the same environment. For the OZK Bx, we chose to use three different legendary OZ’s in the project. I know some breeders might not agree and would prefer 1 on 1 breeding, but I find that by using either multiple moms or multiple donors, especially in line breeding, you can preserve more genetic diversity and often prevent bottlenecking.
In this cross, we used three Legendary OZ receivers…#11, #17, and #24. Each of them had a uniqueness to them, but were overall very similar in morphology. All three of the Legendary OZ’s were on the sativa hybrid side of morphology. They tend to grow upright with long side branching and dense spear shaped buds. Uniformity coming from the Legendary was very apparent. Selections were made based primarily on flavor and bud structure as everything else was fairly uniform. #11 was insanely frosty, probably the most resinous plant in the whole greenhouse. She had a very strong sharp hashy profile that reminded me somewhat of Mendo Breath. #17 was sweet, hashy, with a little garlic funk in the mix that reminded me of a few Fat Yeti Phenos I’ve come across. And Lastly, #24 was the heaviest yielding plant in the greenhouse. Not massive buds in girth or size, but overall rock hard dense spear shaped buds and lot’s of them. Topped once, #24 produced over 20 main flower sites and took up a whole 100 gallon pot pushing her pot mate to the side. Combined with the Garlic CBG, This OZK Bx is gonna level up the OZK line. I have no doubt that there’s going to be something for everyone in this cross..potency, flavor, yields, you name it, she has it.
All test compliant for thc.
